Chinese Fusion in New Westminster.

If you are willing to escape Vancouver then take the Skytrain to Columbia Station, walk a couple hundred feet over to the New Westminster Quay and there you will find a restaurant serving up Grandma’s Chinese cooking with a twist., welcome to Wild Rice. To go with the great food served up by Executive Chef Todd Bright they have a patio with a massive waterfront view of the Fraser River. Explore the River Market then break for a leisurely lunch or dinner at Wild Rice. That sounds like a lovely way to spend some time to me and that’s exactly what I did with my friend Henri who’d never been to New Westminster before. A culinary adventure to New Westminster on a patio with a lovely view of BC’s largest river.

Wild Rice is located at 810 Quayside Drive in the River Market or New Westminster Quay as us Vancouver old-timers know it as. Dock level views from the patio at Wild Rice are fantastic. Henri and I arrived for lunch just as the patio was finished being set up, we had narrowly escaped the rain and only within the past couple of weeks has Wild Rice been open on Mondays so we have it all to ourselves. We have it to ourselves if you don’t count all the people enjoying a walk on the market promenade. Great people watching!

Henri and I are both hungry and thirsty. First up a refreshing Lychee juice and Soda made in house with a cheers. So refreshing this is summer in a glass. Now it’s time to check out the menu.

Cheers to Henri at Wild Rice

Lucky for us Wild Rice owner Andrew Wong was there tidying up the planters that enclose the patio so we asked for his recommendations on what to have and he didn’t steer us wrong. First up is an order of Wor Wonton Soup for Henri and I to share followed by Bacon and Cheeseburger Spring Rolls. I know I they sound crazy but OMG they are delicious, both are to be honest.

For our next round I had to order the Kangaroo Steam Buns in honour of Henri as he is Australian. Made from scratch and full of flavour the steam buns are yummy especially with the Chipotle aioli as a dipping sauce. Since we’re being adventurous with our ordering we had to try the Kung Po Chicken Poutine, they had me at poutine. Instead of French Fries they use polenta fries which helps them stay crispy in all that Kung Po gravy. Super tasty and definitely something I will order again.

Last but not least we order one more dish, some Tea Smoked Chicken Wings. Who doesn’t love chicken wings and it’s fun to explore options other than buffalo wings and blue cheese dipping sauce. Salty, sweet and crunchy  are how these chicken wings taste and they are divine. They taste so good on their own you don’t need to dip them in sriracha aioli.

With great food comes great responsibility and at Wild Rice you get both. Andrew and Todd are very committed to serving local products and supporting sustainable practices whenever then can. The wine list is all about BC Wines for example. So when you head out to Wild Rice to enjoy a meal on this patio you’ll be happy to know that as mush as possible you are supporting your local farmers, ranchers and fishermen.
