Sleeping Pretty At The 140 Year Old Carriage House Inn Bed & Breakfast

1

How would you like to feel asleep every night in a house that was built 140 years ago? That is what I am doing for the next couple of nights as I move to the Carriage House Inn Bed & Breakfast in Fredericton. Built in 1875 the by a Lumber Baron and former mayor, the Carriage House Inn is a 10 bedroom home away from home for many that visit Fredericton year round. Easy walking distance to restaurants and the Historic Garrison District as well as a short stroll down the street to the University of New Brunswick. The comforts of home with the convenience of someone else doing the cooking and the cleaning. I love a historic B & B.

The Carriage House Inn B & B is located at 230 University Ave. It really is a great location. All the peace and quiet you need to relax yet it is just steps away from the restaurant and nightlife scene in downtown Fredericton. It only takes me 10 minutes to walk to the Lunar Rogue Pub for a beer and a plate of Nachos for example. Even better it only takes me 10 minutes to waddle home, wink wink.

Chances are pretty good that when you arrive at the Carriage House Inn you will be coming by car. Don’t worry about where to park because they have all the space in their parking lot you could need. Unless you plan on day tripping outside of Fredericton, I doubt you will need your car once it is parked.

Now that the car is parked I grab my bags and head up to the front door. I ring the bell and am greeted and taken straight through to the office where I do a quick registration. Next I am taken up to my room on the second floor.

Each room at the B&B is 100% private. There is no sharing of bathrooms. My room is quite pretty with a wrought Iron canopy bed, country chic wallpaper and furniture that is comfy and cozy. Off the bedroom is my private bathroom complete with a shower stall. Some may prefer a bathtub, but I prefer a shower. My room also comes with an air conditioner and a minibar fridge. I’m using both to stay cool and to keep the treats I buy from going off. It really is just like being home.

Now that I’m settled into my room I want to explore the rest of the house. It has a total of three floors with the top two filled with the guest rooms. There is a floor 2.5 as I call it where a small sitting room and a library is located.

Back down to the main floor there is a large living and dining room where our breakfast is served each morning. In one corner of the room is a beautiful piano. I wonder if anyone ever plays it?

Speaking of breakfast, I can’t wait for my first one. Instead of a daily feature that is on offer for all the guest you can order what you’d like. You have your choice of cereals, French Toast, a breakfast sandwich, the Carriage House Eggs (scrambled with herbs and cheese)  or 2 Eggs your way. Of course, there is also Bacon and Sausage for us meat lovers. I opted for the Carriage House Eggs with Bacon. Delicious and a perfect way to start my day.

One of the nicest things about staying at a Bed & Breakfast is the chance to meet the other guests. It’s not something you get when you stay at a hotel, but here I had the chance to talk with different people every morning. One lovely couple visiting from Halifax I actually ran into twice in the city after meeting them at breakfast. Once at Chess Piece for coffee and later at BrewBakers where we both were having dinner. Fredericton is a small town and after only a few days I am starting to feel like a local.
