Pizza and Beer. It is a classic Friday night combo for me and just because I am in Toronto doesn’t mean I will let the tradition die. A phone call to my friend Carlos with an invitation for a guys night out and the evening is set. Now all we need to do is figure out where to go for pizza. There are hundreds of Toronto pizza joints to choose from, but we want Neapolitan style thin crust pizza. This means we are heading to Queen Margherita Pizza. Thin crust, bubbling cheese and all made right before our eyes in a wood-fired Pizza oven made right in Naples. This is Pizza and Beer night stepped up a notch.
Queen Margherita Pizza has three locations to choose from with a fourth opening up sometime in 2015. The one that was closest and most convenient for Carlos and I is on Dundas Street West at 772 Dundas Street West, near Bathurst. Easily accessible by car or Street Car.
The street level entrance takes you right into the bar area but if you want the dining room you have to step down into the dining room. Every seat in the house offers up a view of the star of the joint, the wood-fired pizza oven.
Beers are ordered, a toast is made and some appetizers are chosen. Stuffed Piquillo Peppers with Braised Beef Cheeks and Pine Nuts and an order of Arancini with roasted Mushrooms and Carmelized Onions. My favourite was peppers although the Arancini were good as well.
With our appetites whetted by the first course, we are ready for some PIZZA. I go classic and order the namesake pizza Margherita. Thin crust, Queen’s Tomato sauce, and Fior di Latte cheese all topped with fresh basil. Carlos is feeling spicy tonight so he orders the Calabrese, made with Calabrese Sausage, garlic, black pepper and Parmigiano Cheese.
These are individual pizzas good for one hungry person or you can do what we did and share slices. It is the best of both worlds and with so many great pizza choices why have just one.
There is only one more thing left to do and that is to order dessert. It comes as part of the Prix Fixe menu which costs $29 per person. One appetizer, one pizza and one dessert. It’s a great deal and all for under $30. For our dessert, it is Tiramisu all the way. Very tasty and a perfect portion served in a glass.
