How would you like to fall asleep in a post office? It is possible in the town of Strathroy 35 km west of London at the Clock Tower Inn. Built in 1889 by Canadian architect Thomas Fuller, he also designed the Parliament buildings in Ottawa, the signature clock tower towers over downtown Strathroy. Don’t worry you won’t have to sort or deliver mail to stay here thanks to the vision and work of owner Mark Graham. The transformed post office now has 8 luxurious guest suites, a pub and a bistro showcasing Chef Marks talent in the kitchen. If you are looking to escape your busy life for a weekend and want to enjoy a leisurely retreat in Ontario’s Southwest then you can’t find a cuter and more laid back little town than Strathroy. Plus it is only a 40-minute drive to the beaches of Grand Bend.
You can’t miss the Clock Tower Inn when you arrive in Strathroy. The clock tower dominates the local skyline and the classic red brick exterior of the original post office building almost glows when the sun hits it.
After parking my car in the lot behind the building I bring my bags through the original post office branded arches and step into the lobby which is also the location of the Bistro. I have a dinner reservation here for later this evening so while the clerk takes care of the registration paperwork I peruse the menu. Looks tasty.
All of that paperwork taken care of I take my bags up to my room. One of eight suites at the Inn. Each is equipped with private baths, fireplaces, flat screen televisions and complimentary wifi internet access. All of that and Victorian decor blend the old and the new quite nicely.
I especially love the bathroom that comes with heated tile floors and a shower in what was once a vault. Kinda cool and surprisingly great water pressure.
After enjoying a little nap and some downtime it is time for dinner in the Bistro. You can dress up if you’d like but no need to worry about a jacket as it is right downstairs.
Now what to have for dinner? First a pint of Railway City Brewing Co. beer and then a delicious serving of the Clock Tower Beef Stroganoff. Dinner isn’t complete without dessert and who can resist Mile High Lemon Meringue Pie? I certainly didn’t. Yummy.
Time to head to bed, a little reading and a good nights sleep is what I need. Tomorrow is a new day and one I plan on taking very easy.
The Clock Tower Bistro serves breakfast but I opt to walk the main street and visit Tia’s Place for some eggs. An omelette with bacon and hash brown potatoes is the perfect way to start my weekend morning off.
The rest of the morning I spend exploring some of the quaint shops on the strip with a notable stop at Windells Chocolates. I couldn’t resist a cupcake to enjoy while I wandered up and down the street.
This little getaway is all about slowing down and chillin out and that is exactly what I’ve done. Later I am heading to Grand Bend but for now, I’m just going to enjoy a coffee and enjoy this quaint little town called Strathroy.
