When I say, Palm Springs, you say… mid century modern! No other city that I have been to epitomizes the architecture and design of mid century modern better than this desert oasis. An entire week is dedicated to the modernism movement in October with tours of private homes and events to please the most fervent mid century modern fan. There is one thing you can do year round in Palm Springs though and that is to go on a mid century modern shopping spree! For my friends that collect it, Palm Springs is their Disneyland. Bring your credit card it is time to go shopping.
I challenge you to find another city where you can go mid century modern shopping from original pieces to reproductions in as many places. I’ve found the mecca of all locations for you and it is the Antique Galleries of Palm Springs.
Located at 505 Industrial Place, just off South Plam Canyon Drive it is a hidden gem for mid century modern shopping.
Within this two story, 12000 square feet building reside 40+ vendors. Unless you pay very close attention it is hard to see where one shop ends and another begins, but you don’t need to worry about it. All pieces and items are paid for at a common register located at the front of the building.
Give yourself a good hour to wander the store and look everywhere because you don’t know what you might miss.
They have furniture, coloured glass vases, jewellery and housewares galore.
There is so much to explore and leaving with my friend Lauren proved difficult as she kept finding more cool things to check out.
As for other mid century modern shopping spots, there are plenty. Take a walk along South Palm Canyon Drive and you will discover shops like Pelago and designer Trina Tirk. I picked up a lovely Turquoise pinky ring from Pelago (not MCM) while my friend Lauren bought herself the ultimate mid century modern reproduction chip and dip platter set.
