Do you have a traveler in your life? Someone who would rather get out and see the world rather than do the same thing weekend after weekend. Do they have a “countries traveled” checklist? It’s hard to shop for these people and I know because I am one of them. We want to collect experiences not “things”. If they are like me they really don’t want things because I live out of my suitcase and backpack. Pretty much everything I own is accessible to me by undoing a zipper. BUT there are some things that every traveler needs to make the experience that much better and I’ve compiled a list of Black Friday Cyber Monday gifts for travelers that will make buying for them super easy this holiday season.

Some of the items are things I have already and some are things I wish I had. I’ve also only selected items that have a small footprint when packed away. This means they are light, compact ready to go on an adventure whenever you are.

Gift of Canada

Parks Canada Discovery Pass – 20% off now until Dec 31, 2018. Is there anything better than getting out into nature whenever you feel like it? There are over 80 National Parks across Canada that the Parks Canada Discovery Pass gives you access to. From now until Dec 31, 2018, the 2019 Discovery Pass is 20% off.

Luggage and Packing Cubes

Swiss Gear Getaway Collection – A successful trip starts with packing right and smartly. The Swiss Gear Getaway collection is designed to fit all your items needed for a great getaway and it stows above and below your plane seat. I travel exclusively with the carry-on and the 15.6″ laptop backpack.

Gobi Gear SegSac aka the HoboRoll – We all know about packing cubes but what about one bag that has 4 or more segments and can keep it all in one place? Fellow traveler Nora Dunn can’t live without her HoboRoll and in fact uses it on every trip she takes, on that is a lot!

Gift of Where You Come From

Ancestry DNA – How far can you trace your family tree? Do you even know where you come from before your grandparents? I am obsessed with the PBS show Finding Your Roots and I dream of finding out where my ancestors come from and possibly retracing their steps myself. How cool to explore where you come from.

Gift of Sleep on a Plane

Trtl travel pillowCasie Stewart swears by her Trtl travel pillow and by the looks of it I would actually use this one. No bulky u-shaped pillow taking up space in my suitcase or falling off my backpack when I’m constantly on the go. This travel pillow is light and folds up to take almost no space in your bags. Plus it’ll keep your neck warm and cosy on those long-haul flights you dream of sleeping through.

Passport Protector

Waterproof Passport Wallet – Everything has its place when I travel and a passport wallet that is both waterproof, blocks RFID and is easy to carry is essential. Craig Silva agrees and it’s where he keeps all his important items when is on the road and out of the country. It’s smart to always have a photocopy of your travel documents saved online and in another suitcase just in case.

Battery Power

Portable Charger Anker PowerCore 20100mAh Christopher Rudder like most of us never wants his smartphone to die when he is on an epic adventure. This Anker portable charger can charge up to two devices at once and is good for multiple charges. You will never run out of juice when you are on the road again.

Photograph all the Angles

NELOMO Universal Professional HD Camera Lens Kit – Who needs to pack their DSLR? With these simple and easy to attach lenses you can turn your smartphone into the ultimate memory maker. Wide angle, macro zoom and fisheye photos are just a clip away. Best of all it comes in a small case you can clip on your belt loop or backpack so they are always close at hand.

A Million Books at your Fingertips

Kobo e-reader – I never thought I would join the e-reader bandwagon but I did over a year ago and I haven’t looked back. In particular, I love the Kobo e-readers because I can link them up to OverDrive with my Canadian public library card and “borrow” e-books no matter where in the world I am as long as I have WiFi access. Here I am by the pool in Naples, Flordia about to start reading The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

Gift of Travel

Airline Seat Sales – Now this Black Friday sale might be more for yourself than someone else but on Nov 23rd I am betting that all the major airlines and vacation package companies like Air Canada Vacations will have big sales.  What you need to do to take advantage of these sales are simple.

  1. Be online when the sale launches. Sign up with your favourite airlines to get their newsletters so that you’ll be amongst the first to know when the sales start
  2. Set up a Google Alert for your desired destination so that is the price drops and you are not right at your computer you will get notified.
  3. Be prepared to book it right away. A seat sale will do you no good if you can’t make the decision to go right then and there as seats and prices will be limited.
  4. Once you’ve booked your flights check out accommodation offers. For example, the Chelsea Hotel Toronto has already announced they will offer 25% off during Black Friday Cyber Monday. Conditions do apply so check out the details in advance.
