Do you enjoy exploring small towns? I do. Kingsville, Ontario has a population of approximately 21,500 and is located in the heart of Epic Wine Country in Ontario’s Southwest. This Essex County town has a lot to offer visitors that are looking to escape the city and enjoy a more leisurely paced adventure. With easy access to fun on Lake Erie, 17 wineries and day hiking on Pelee Island I can only wonder why haven’t I been to Kingsville before? Taking a break from visiting local wineries I discovered a brewhouse and a chocolate shop unlike any I had ever visited before. Both located on the main street and within walking distance of each other I think I’ve found a perfect spot for a break while exploring Kingsville.

Old Dutch Guys Chocolate 2 Main St W, Kingsville – If you love chocolate then a stop at Old Dutch Guys Chocolate is an absolute MUST. Opened by Cor Boon and Henry Noestheden, two old Dutch guys, this chocolate shop is unlike any I’ve visited before. They only serve dark chocolate, the fillings are delicately flavoured and a “snap” is heard with each bite.

Honey Lavender, Caramel and the Red Chili were my favourites. In fact, I loaded up a box with multiples of each flavour to enjoy after dinner.

What really makes this chocolate shop unique though are the chocolate carvings and medallions. Cor first carves them out of wood and then Henry makes a mould from the sculpture from which chocolate replicas are made. The details are impressive don’t you think? Best of all the prices are very reasonable. This poodle is only $20 and a box of 12 truffles goes for $27. Both are great to enjoy on your own or as gifts for friends, family or host/hostess gifts.

The Grove Brewhouse 12 Main St E, Kingsville – Now that I’ve satisfied my chocolate craving I walk a few feet to visit The Grove Brewhouse for a beer or two. The Grove also has a hotel next door so perhaps if you are looking to spend a night in town it would make a great option.

Brewed on site there are lots of beers here available for you to try. Eight were on tap during my visit and range from 7 oz to 20 oz pours. I sampled a flight of three while I was relaxing and fell in love with the George the Ghost Blood Orange Hefeweizen.

If you do stay overnight and need a caffeine fix first thing in the morning or beer isn’t your thing head to Merli’s Coffee House & Eatery located right beside Old Dutch Guys Chocolates. Great baked goods, sandwiches and of course great coffee.

Kingsville is just one of the many small towns I’m enjoying exploring throughout Ontario and there are lots still to discover.
