Summertime is nigh and the living is easy.
If you’ve lived in Vancouver for more than 15 years and are a lover of Martinis then you’ve been to our next 30 Best Patios feature but you just didn’t realize it. Back in the day, located in the Buchanan Hotel west of Denman Street was Delilah’s, Vancouver’s original Martini Bar. It’s moved location and no longer operates but in the old space Adesso Bistro has risen and is doing beautifully. Doing beautifully is an understatement actually. Tucked beside the dining room is their outdoor patio space which can only be described as magical. Enjoying a meal here is like having dinner in your own backyard garden patio, but with servers. Magical.
Adesso Bistro is at 1906 Haro St and with just a few steps down from the street you enter the restaurant which has a dark, cozy and intimate atmosphere. Step to the left to enter the patio and you are transported. Walled on two sides by massive hedges and covered by a huge pergola twined with lights, even though you are surrounded by the West End you still feel cocooned and very private.
For a magical and intimate dinner I’m joined by one of my good friends and a blogger in her own right, Cathy Browne. I arrived a bit early so I decided to treat myself to a martini in honour of the good times had when this space was Delilah’s. Just as I was finishing my Vespa martini Cathy arrived and we switched to wine, cheers to a great evening.
The menu at Adesso Bistro is modern Italian and one of the options they provide you with is a 3 course Prixe Fixe Menu with or without wine pairing. Normally that’s what I would choose but tonight both Cathy and I just to order off the menu. Focaccia Bread to start followed by my first course of Insalata di Barbabietole, a salad made from red and golden beets, arugula and gorgonzola cheese. A salad that tastes like summer, light and fresh.
After ordering another glass of wine our main courses arrive. Cathy is having the Pansotti a house made pasta filled with swiss chard, ricotta and herbs with a tomato sauce and parmesan. I on the other hand go for the Filetto di Maiale or Pork Loin with a pine nut, raisin & roasted garlic stuffing. Both dishes were superb and my pork was cooked to perfection.
Patio Check list:
- View – garden oasis with a view of some of the city buildings
- Reservations – yes
- All weather patio – no but spectacular when the weather is warm
- parking – limited parking in the West End, better to walk or cab it
- Social Media – follow them on Facebook and Twitter
- Coolness – very private and romantic
The Adesso Bistro is a special place but you don’t need a special occasion to go there. I highly recommend making a reservation as this Italian garden oasis in the heart of our city fills up quickly. Order a cocktail, relax and let yourself unwind in one of the most tranquil settings of any of the 30 Best Patios.
