1000 people 1 lawn and a whole lot of stretching.
Suits, Parks and Politicians, that is my impression of Ottawa. At least that was my impression of Ottawa. 30 Days In Ottawa is opening my eyes to the real Ottawa. A growing local food scene, a loyal craft beer following and dedicated Yoga enthusiasts. Do we have Vancouver to thank for the Yoga scene? I’m not sure about that but the Vancouver Yoga giant hosts a weekly group Yoga class on the lawn in front of the Parliament building. This is definitely not what I was expecting to see in Ottawa.
Throughout the summer you can find yoga enthusiasts gathering every Wednesday at noon on the lawn. You bring your own mat but Lululemon supplies the sound system and the instructors. At around 11:40 there was about 75 people on the lawn but in the span of 15 minutes it was filled with almost 1000 people.
When the clock strikes 12 the deep breathing begins. The instructor welcomes the crowd and starts everyone off it’s time to de stress.
It is really quote the sight to behold. In this one hour they are a collective soul working together yet when it’s over they go their separate ways, perhaps to battle over policies and politics.
My good friend and travel buddy Erica even got in on the action. I’m not sure what pose she is doing but she is right in there with everyone else.
I’m not sure if you can really appreciate how many people came out to do yoga so I went to the top of the steps leading up to Parliament for another view. It’s very impressive.
True to form though nothing can happen at Parliament Hill without politics getting in the way. Within the first 15 minutes of the yoga class beginning I was able to witness the newly minted Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau give a press conference about the “Senate Expense Account” scandal.
Yoga and a press conference, is that Yin and Yang for Parliament Hill? Well all I can say is that I did not expect to witness either so I called it a great day, but if you live in Ottawa It’s probably just another day.
I wonder what’s in store for the rest of my 30 Days In Ottawa?
