You want to get out of the city, but you don’t want to spend hours in traffic or deal with airport security. How about a quick trip to Barrie, Ontario for a staycation at Casino Rama Resort? They call themselves the great indoors and it is no wonder. With eight restaurants to choose from, large hotel suites, 24-hour room service, world-class concerts and events on premise PLUS a full-service spa, pool and of course a Vegas-like casino. Once you step inside Casino Rama you don’t need to leave, unless it is to go to the bank with all your winnings.

Now I am not a gambler so it may seem strange to book a staycation at a casino, but just think of all the awesome amenities they have to keep the high rollers happy, including a Tim Hortons.

Of course, the first thing to do upon arrival at Casino Rama is to check into my room. Check in is 4 pm, but I’ve lucked out and my room is ready early. Up I go.

What a room. I’ve a large king sized room complete with small dining table, couch and entertainment centre, plus a luxurious bathroom and a large comfy king sized bed.

Ok, the room is great so now it is time to explore the entire resort and get my bearings for the property. This is going to be home for three nights so I think I should know where everything is.

At the opposite end of the resort lies the Casino floor and in between, there are shops, restaurants and an amazing theatre that is home to an impressive line-up of world-class entertainers. One of my favourites has played here already.

The one amenity I am excited about the most at the resort is not located on the main floor. Take the elevator up to the third floor and you will discover the heated Salt Water Pool and the Balance In Life Spa. First order of business is to book a massage. It was heavenly! Thank you, Megan!!!!

Next, it is time to head into the pool. Grab a book and read in one of the loungers or leave your stuff in a locker and soak in the steam room. I did it all.

A little relaxing pool time

There is only one thing left for me to do at Casino Rama and that is to try one of the restaurants. With eight to choose from, one is bound to tickle your fancy. I’ve selected dinner at St Germain’s Steak House for my first nibble. The first course is a Beet Carpaccio, followed by Crispy Brussels Sprouts with Smoked Ricotta Cheese +++. The dishes tasted as fine as they looked.

The main course and dessert did not disappoint either. A Duo of Sous Vide Alberta Beef Tenderloin and Maple Braised Short Rib followed by a dessert sampler of Tiramisu, Triple Chocolate Pyramid Cake & Maple Creme Brulee.

And this is just day one… Repeat for two more glorious nights and you have a fantastic staycation getaway that is less than 2 hours from Toronto and about 4 hours from Ottawa.

If you want to “get active” I’ve some great winter activities that I will share with you in another post. All just a short drive from Casino Rama.
