Where To Stay In Portland, The Courtyard Marriott – My Favourite Courtyard

This is my favourite Courtyard Marriott.

Wondering where to stay in Portland? Look no further than the Courtyard Marriott located right in the heart of all the action downtown. I know your first reaction is to say a Courtyard Marriott? They are great hotels for business travel, the rooms are always decent and the price is very reasonable but why choose to stay here for a vacation? Because this Courtyard has become my favourite Courtyard and it’s also John Biehler’s favourite place to stay when he visits Portland. No lie.  This Courtyard has all the comforts you’d expect from the brand but what makes it special is the attention to detail and attitude of all the staff members. It may be a Marriott but they treat you like you are staying at a boutique hotel and service is always #1. 30 Days In Portland couldn’t be more comfortable calling the Courtyard Marriott home for a couple of nights.

The Courtyard Marriott is located at 550 SW Oak St between 5th and 6th Streets, a 5 to 15 minute walk to almost everything  downtown. Check in was as quick and seamless as I expected, then straight up to check out my room.

My room is gorgeous. Once again I’m lucky enough to get a corner room with a view that is spectacular. It’s a cloudy day but that doesn’t lessen the impact of the view. A super comfy bed and a great “office” area set up so I can work from my laptop in comfort and style.

The bathroom is massive and once again I have a shower stall which makes me a happy camper. If only my bathroom back in Vancouver was this big and roomy. A nice feature of this room has to be the mini foyer space at the entrance to the room. I have a closet and a small little space to put my keys and wallet when I return to the room each time. It’s the little things that make me feel like I’m at home.

Now that I’m all settled in my room I can’t help but head back downstairs to check out Happy Hour at The Original, the hotel’s restaurant. I say hotel restaurant but it’s actually not your standard hotel restaurant. The Original is run and managed completely separate from the hotel. It’s a separate business with it’s own management and team running it yet it’s still a part of the hotel, the best of both worlds. I’m joined for Happy Hour by the Courtyards’ GM Matthew who treats me to cocktails and some very delicious happy hour snacks.

You know I love this place already, the colour blue is everywhere in the decor. Feeling daring I let the bartender chose my first drink. I’d like to tell you what he made me but It was his own creation and it wasn’t on the list. It was delicious though. To go with the cocktail I couldn’t resist 2 of their tasty happy hour treats, Donut Burger Sliders and Chicken & Waffle Sliders. I know you are drooling already. Do they not look delicious? They taste as good as they look and I discovered that everything served at The Original is made from scratch on the premises, including the donuts in the sliders. Very impressive indeed. I would have loved to have met the Chef but he wasn’t on while I was there. Too bad because I need to shake the hand of the man/woman who makes treats like those Smile

The Original was so good I had to go back the next morning and try it for breakfast. It was packed with hotel guests but also folks that work in the area that came in for some food to start their day. It’s a very handy location as the Tri-Met (Portland Transit) stops right out front. For my breakfast I couldn’t resist ordering the Cobb Omelette. It’s one of my favourite salads so why not an omelette. Yum yum yum.

I know why this hotel is nicknamed My Favourite Courtyard, because it is. I highly recommend staying here when you next visit Portland, you will not be disappointed. This Courtyard Marriott gets the 30 Days 2 thumbs up of approval. Thank you to Matthew and his team for hosting me, I will be back for more of those sliders.

I want to thank my sponsors Roam Mobility and GM Canada for helping me make this series possible. Roam of course for their awesome product to help me stay connected at a reasonable price and to GM for providing me with a sweet ride to make the road trip in. I don’t know what I’ll be getting yet but I’m looking forward to exploring and test driving a brand new GM.
