Who enjoys a pint of Craft Beer? I certainly do and over the past 10 days of my exploration of Prince Edward Island I’ve come to discover that Canada’s smallest Province has a few microbreweries you should check out, plus two craft distilleries. One of which makes legal Moonshine! While the PEI craft beer scene may not be as big as it is in Quebec, Ontario or British Columbia, it holds its own. Most importantly you can find these beers and spirits all over the province. The three microbreweries are all located in Charlottetown while the distillers can be found on the Points East Coastal Drive. If you have a designated driver you could visit them all in one day. You gotta love Prince Edward Island.
BEER – As I mentioned there are three craft breweries in Charlottetown.
Gahan House – Let’s start with the brewpub first. Located in downtown Charlottetown you can enjoy their beer at the brewhouse and all over the Island. I never made it inside Gahan House but I did enjoy the Blueberry Ale during dinner while I stayed at the West Point Lighthouse.
Prince Edward Brewing Company – The tasting room is located just on the outskirts of town, however, you can get these beers anywhere on the Island. In fact, the Beach Chair Lager was the beer I had the most during my stay. I tried to visit the brewery, but they were hosting a huge wedding party in the tasting room and there was no way to make it inside. Next visit.
Upstreet Craft Brewing – My favourite microbrewery in PEI is the newest, Upstreet Craft Brewing. I had such a good time trying their beers I even grabbed one of their beer evangelists, Jesse Hitchcock, and did a quick interview with her. You can listen to it below.
CRAFT SPIRITS – Head East and you’ll find two great micro distillers each creating their own artisanal craft spirit.
Prince Edward Distillery – Potato Vodka, Gin and Wild Blueberry Vodka are all made right on Prince Edward Island. This distillery in Souris has grown so popular they’ve expanded to Halifax where they also make Rum and Whiskey. All available for tasting and buying at the original distillery location on PEI.
Myriad View Distillery – Want a taste of some Moonshine? Head to the North East corner of PEI and stop in at Myriad View Distillery. They’ve way more than Moonshine for you to taste and buy, though. They have London Dry Gin, Brandy, Vodka, Whisky, Rum and Dandelion Shine. You definitely want a designated driver for a visit here.
Did I miss any? I did. I tried to visit Deep Roots Distillery but wasn’t able to squeeze them in. You can find them at the Charlottetown Farmers Market if you are in town on Saturdays. Enough places to make your visit
There are enough PEI craft beer and spirits to make your visit to the Island a happy one. When you’re next at a restaurant or a pub ask for what’s local and know that what you are enjoying was made under 2 hours away from where you are.
