The most important meal of the day.

The most important meal of the day is breakfast. I know you thought I was going to say dessert but when you are on vacation I feel that breakfast takes on a double importance. Of course it provides fuel for the day, and on my adventurous 30 Days Of Summer I need all the fuel I can get but the other important thing about breakfast is it sets the tone for your day. For example, during my visit to Penticton my itinerary usually started at around 10am. That leaves me with a couple of hours at the beginning of the day between waking up and getting out, what to do with that time? I usually write my days story, post it to social media and then I’m off but while I’m staying at the Penticton Lakeside Resort I decide to break with tradition and it’s all because of the Hooded Merganser, a restaurant on the lake, overlooking the lake, hell I might as well be in the lake it’s so close. It’s the perfect place to start my day, let’s eat at the “Hood”.

The Hooded Merganser in Penticton

The Hooded Merganser is 1 of three restaurants at the Penticton Lakeside Resort and it’s also the name of a bird that calls this area home. Situated right over the waters of Lake Okanagan the Hood as it’s known around town is the perfect place to start our end you day and everything in between. For both of my mornings in Penticton this is where I chose to start it. Walking inside the restaurant and looking out towards the lake says it all, the location is perfection.

Both mornings I grabbed a seat on the wrap around deck. Coffee by the buckets is ordered and sunscreen liberally applied to my face before being seated are the two mandatory first steps. Of course there is a shady portion of the deck by why, bring on the sunshine say I! Just look at the view from my table. A gorgeous lake in front and to the right a marina where you can rent a boat to head out onto Lake Okanagan.

As I mentioned I spent both of my Penticton morning here for breakfast, the first breakfast was all about the hollandaise sauce with a classic Eggs Benny while my second breakfast was a Cheddar and Chive Scramble. Both were fantastic with really great potatoes and of course fresh Okanagan fruit on the side. More than the fruit was fresh from the Okanagan though as the Chef grows all his own greens and herbs just 20 feet from the restaurant in his own Herb Garden. They also make their own honey from their bees but I didn’t have any so I scooped a little jar to bring home with me to try.

So you’re probably wondering what makes this place special aside from good food and a great view and why I said that there are 2 reasons that Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Well you’ve seen the fuelling up for the day part but the 2nd important function of breakfast on a vacation is the chance to gather yourself, reflect on the adventures had the day before and plan the adventures yet to come. Breakfast is the only true calm moment of my day where no other thoughts and needs creep into my brain needing attention. It’s my quiet time when I’m alone and it’s my “what do you want to do today” time when I’m with friends. Both are equally valuable and important to me and I’ve enjoyed that moment here at the Hooded Merganser as well as anywhere I’ve been, hands down.

Do you agree? What’s your most important meal of the day when you are on a vacay?
