Have you been to the Soo? Sault Ste Marie is located just under 700 km North of Toronto on the Westernmost shore of Lake Superior and inspired the Group of Seven to paint “Canada” in a way that had never been done before. If you haven’t been you are missing out on experiencing what helped inspire Canadian identity in Art. I’ll be taking the same Agawa Canyon Train route that Lawren Harris took almost 100 years ago but before I do I want to spend a little time exploring Sault Ste Marie and all it has to offer. My home base will be the Holiday Inn Express, a Sault Ste Marie hotel perfect for business and pleasure travellers. From here I can explore the culinary and craft beer offerings not to mention plenty of nature and of course early Canadian history. Let my Soo adventures begin.
Sault Ste Marie, Ontario is a twin city with Sault Ste Marie, Michigan. Make sure when looking for restaurants, and activities you are looking at the right Sault Ste Marie. There are even two Holiday Inn Express Sault Ste Marie, one in each city. I am staying in Canada on this trip and am quite happy with the Canadian Holiday Inn Express location. It is located across from the Station Mall and just a five-minute walk to the Agawa Canyon Train loading area.
The Holiday Inn Express is also a short walk from the waterfront, Art Gallery of Algoma and many restaurants to satisfy your palette. More on those in another story. It is time for me to check into the hotel.
With a total of 115 rooms available the Holiday Inn Express is sure to be able to host you. The staff is extremely friendly and it all starts at registration. Michelle takes my info and checks me in. Guess what I’ve been upgraded! It pays to be an IHG Rewards member.
I made a short video touring my room. It is a wow and I can’t believe it is only $179 a night at the time of my stay.
There aren’t many suites like that available though so I did a quick tour of a standard Double Queen room which is was I was expecting to stay in. Nice coffee, microwave and mini fridge station along with a very serviceable work desk attached to the entertainment section. I can brew a cup of coffee to keep me jazzed while I work or make a bag of microwave popcorn to enjoy while I watch a movie. Business or pleasure or as I prefer both!
Whether you are coming up to Sault Ste Marie for work or for pleasure I highly recommend the Holiday Inn Express as your first option for a Sault Ste Marie hotel. The rates are great, staff is super friendly, breakfast is included and it offers a great location at a fair price.
If you are lucky enough to secure a suite maybe you’ll be able to relax in your own mini living room like I did. I even had the fireplace going, just for effect.
