I love doughnuts, cakes, pies, tarts, cookies, ice cream, you name it. If it is sweet I LOVE IT! I grew up in a household that dinner wasn’t complete until you’d had dessert. Even a bowl of Jello counted as dessert in my family. Fast forward forty plus years and I still have a sweet tooth that is hard for me to dinner. I can have one glass of wine with dinner or pass on alcohol altogether if I plan on driving, but if I see a doughnut shop HOLD THE PRESSES. This Easter weekend I’m heading off to visit friends in Paris, Ontario and I’ve decided to bring some treats as a host gift. Where should I go? Into Burlington for some of the best doughnuts to visit a vegan/gluten free bakery that will make a believer out of anyone. All hail the mighty doughnut.

My first stop is to The Sunshine Doughnut Co. at 439 Brock Ave. It’s my first stop because I am afraid they may sell out in anticipation of all the visiting families over the Easter weekend. That and they make the best doughnuts in Burlington.

The biggest challenge you will find at Sunshine Doughnuts is stopping at just six doughnuts. If my waistline would allow it I would take one of every flavour they create. Instead, I settle for just three on this visit. Strawberry & Cream, Dulce de Leche and a Lemon doughnut are my choices. I almost picked up the Brown Butter & Praline for the commute to my next stop.

Some fo the best doughnuts ever

Side not, I went back to visit Sunshine Doughnuts on Easter Sunday and by the time I had got there they were sold out. Lesson get their early and you won’t be disappointed.

My next stop is the definition of paradise for a Celiac with a sweet tooth. As my Mom has was diagnosed with a gluten intolerance over 25 years ago, I know a thing or two about what makes a good gluten free bakery. Kelly’s Bake Shoppe at 401 Brant St is one of the best I’ve ever visited and they are also dairy free, egg free, butter free, lactose free, vegan and peanut free. That is a whole lot of free in your decadent dessert. Are they guilt free? You’ll have to decide that for yourself.

Expect a lineup when you enter, but don’t worry it moves fast. As there are three of us for the weekend I picked up six treats. Two cupcakes, a pumpkin scone and three cookies that include a Snickerdoodle, Lemon Meltaway and a World Peace cookie.

Now the tough part comes in. Where to start? I almost picked up the Snickerdoodle Cookie Sandwich but decided with the doughnuts, cupcakes and cookies I was well set to go visit my friends in Paris.

Success! My friends loved all the treats and best of all they didn’t know that the cupcakes, cookies and scone came from a gluten free bakery. That is the true sign of a great gluten free bakery. One that everyone will love even those that can have gluten.

The next time you are driving through the golden horseshoe make sure you stop in Burlington to load up on some sweet treats. You won’t regret it, I guarantee it!

  1. I LOVE this post! You know I love chocolate, and so the chocolate cupcakes look delish. But please don’t tell me you ate 6 donuts in one sitting??? I can’t imagine ever doing that as my arteries would clog up after the 3rd one.
