Relax and let someone else do the cooking.

Touring the Golden Mile and Black Sage Benches with the OK Wine Shuttle can leave you exhausted and hungry. Who knew drinking great wine could wear you out so much. When it came time to decide on our “last supper” in Osoyoos my Mom and I had two choices. The first would be to run to the grocery store and pick up some food that we could cook in our kitchenette at Spirit Ridge Vineyard & Resort, while a great idea if we were staying in Osoyoos for a week or two for this short trip it sounds like too much work. Our second choice, and the one we chose, was to visit Watermark Beach Resort and enjoy a light dinner at the Watermark Wine Bar & Patio. Views of Osoyoos Lake, a glass of wine, the company of my Mom and some great food, sounds like a pretty good night to me.

The Watermark Beach Resort is located right in the centre of Downtown Osoyoos. You can’t miss it in fact as it’s right at the end of Main Street, right on the water at 15 Park Place. They have a small lounge inside but it’s the patio that we came for. We grabbed a lovely table with a view of the lawn and beyond that Osoyoos Lake.

To start off our night I order a glass of Watermark Pinot Gris, made in partnership with Orofino Vineyards, while my Mom orders the Peach & Green cocktail which is made from Okanagan Peaches, fresh Basil & Gin. Cheers to our last dinner in Osoyoos.

Our server tonight also happens to be the Food & Beverage Manager and when we mentioned to him that my Mom has Celiac Disease and can’t have any Gluten his response was no problem at all. He also has Celiac so almost everything on the menu is Gluten Free or can be made Gluten Free by the removal of an item, for example no corn bread with the ribs. Jackpot! My Mom is so excited that the entire menu is open for her to choose from. So what do we do, we let them choose our dinner for us. Our first course is two salads, an Heirloom Tomato Salad and a Mixed Green Salad served in a large Mason Jar. Both use ingredients sourced locally from Covert Farms and are as fresh tasting as you can get.

Our next course is a surprise as it’s not on the menu. A dish of Scallops with pesto served on pickled yellow cucumbers. The scallops were cooked perfectly and couldn’t be any fresher and the pickled cucumbers were crunchy and had a hint of lemon. A nice surprise and very light.

From our table I could see all of our food being prepared and then brought to us, the kitchen is actually outdoors and is part of the patio. Executive Chef Adair Scott and his team may prep inside in their banquet kitchen but when the weather is nice they cook al fresco with their diners.

The next course to come from the al fresco kitchen is all about meat! BBQ Ribs, because my Mom can’t resist, and a Grilled Pork Sausage platter with caramelized onion Perogies. The perogies and cornbread are cornbread are the only things my Mom can’t eat but I can Smile. Everything is made in house, the BBQ sauce, the cornbread, the perogies and yes even the sausages. This course was finger licking good!

We have no room left for anything else. We are stuffed full to bursting, but wait, what is this? A dessert platter compliments of the Chef and everything is Gluten Free. Ok we’ll have a bite. Where to start? The Meringue with house made ice ream, the Flourless Chocolate Torte or the Vanilla Crème Brule? All were divine and most importantly enjoyed by my Mom.

Not a bad way to end a trip to Osoyoos is it? After you’ve eaten your fill you can even go for a stroll along the lake front to burn off a calorie or two.

One of the reasons that I love visiting Osoyoos is that the accommodation and dinning options are on par with the award winning wines that surround the resort town, not to mention all the awesome fruit that grows within arms reach of the road. Five hours from Vancouver yet it feels like you’ve escaped to the desert. What’s your favourite thing about Osoyoos?
